Svartivoss is not the tallest, biggest, most thunderous of Iceland's waterfalls. But it is beautifully situated in Skaftafell National Park, just a short walk from the parking lot. And a closer look reveals the unique black basalt columns that give it its name.

We climbed onto Skaftafellsjökull. We did not dare go much beyond a few feet onto the ice. The ice is covered in dirt and rocks here, and it is very treacherous and slippery.

The icefront of Skaftafellsjökull can easily be reached from the parking lot at Skaftafell (more). You can get right on the ice, and when I stood there I felt like I could almost feel the ice grinding along the rocky mountain slope.
